As session 2 began, the party continued their exploration of the Temple of Elok in search of Dawn Mistwalker‘s father Ferrik, and the mask they had come to the temple to find.
The temple continued to offer up dangers and challenges. Shortly after working their way past a locked door, the party battled the largest group of goblins they had encountered so far, and despite taking some nasty damage, they managed to pull together and defeat them. While searching the area the goblins had been inhabiting, the party discovered two young boys that the goblins had beaten and starved into submission. Knowing that there were still many dangers ahead, the decision was made to leave them food and clothing, and to come back for them as soon as possible.
The next encounter the temple offered up was a turning point in the search. After battling two hobgoblins, Ferrik was found in their lair badly beaten but alive. At urging from both Dawn and Ferrik, the decision was made to rest the night in the Hobgoblin’s former lair before continuing the search for the mask. During the night, Nightingale discussed the mask with Ferrik and learned that it was called the Mask of the Nightbringers. Securing the mask would allow Dawn and Ferrik admission into an adventure’s guild called The Wanderers. A wish that Ferrik’s deceased wife, Dawn’s mother, had made on her death bed. She had always wanted to adventure about the world, but for one reason or another had never made the leap. She did not want Dawn and Ferrik to die with the same regret.
Early the next morning, all five ventured out to find the mask. The search did not take long as they quickly discovered another lair close by where a goblinoid creature and his Worg were somehow waiting for you. The goblinoid creature was wearing the mask that Dawn and Ferrik were searching for. It warned them of the return of the Nightbringers just before a battle erupted. A battle that once again saw the party taking a lot of damage, but coming out victorious. With the mask recovered, they returned to collect the children with plans to depart the temple for Whalespell at once. After a short search, the children were discovered outside the temple, and they hit the trail for Whalespell.
The next two days of travel to Whalespell were uneventful. Upon arrival, Dawn and Ferrik invited the party to stay with them in their small apartment. After enjoying a much-needed night of ales and laughs, Nightingale, Corvus, and Douglan slept through the first night in a long time that did not require a watch.
The next morning after the group’s discussion and agreement, Dawn took the children to Gath’s temple in Whalespell called The Temple of the Golden Sun along with a sizable donation so that the clerics there could look after them. The rest headed to Wind Kept Citadel to speak with The Vanguard. A meeting that Douglan hoped would bring answers to his many questions about the rifts and the beings that had been traveling through them. Douglan hoped this information would help him find a way to get to his daughter Maggie.
At Wind Kept Citadel, the party was brought before Seer Yennall. The Seer spoke with Douglan about the events of the night that Anton returned. It soon became clear that Douglan’s memories of the night had been altered. It appeared that Maggie and a group of beings Douglan learned were called Gith had come back with Anton. They took up defensive positions as Maggie walked Anton toward the house. A second group of Gith emerged through a second rift and a battle broke out between the two groups. Maggie and her companions, along with Douglan’s assistance, were victorious. Just as the battle was ending, Douglan was struck by an energy blast that dropped him to the ground. Maggie spoke to her father stating that they still needed her help and that she would return when she was done. The revelation of the true events of the day created more questions than answers. The Seer assured Douglan that if he keep searching for answers that they would find him. With that, the group was escorted from the Seer’s chamber.
