Recap of Session 48

As the last session began, it was early evening on the 32nd day of the 2nd Trigon of Elok’s Influence. Douglan, Kogaan, Palu and Hahnu stood before the portal, ready for anything that might emerge. Inside the shimmering darkness could be heard the now familiar clicking and snapping of the creatures who seem to inhabit that world. Thankfully, the corner of the portal leading into Emathan remained open.

After a quick goodbye to Palu, the rest of the group crawled through the portal, back into Emathan. Immediately, they noticed one of the strange creatures from the other side of the portal lying in pieces on the ground. It was clear that it had been smashed by something big.

As the Douglan and Kogaan looked over the remains, a roar came from the far side of the old temple. The roar was familiar to them. At once, they knew that the Dire Troll they had fought before must still be alive.

Outside the old temple, Aldric arrived, tired and cold from another long day of travel through a growing winter storm. He knew at once that this was the place that his patron had been guiding him toward. This was the place he was to meet his new companions. Turning invisible, he cautiously entered the tunnel. Multiple piles of gnawed bones and a great roar from down the tunnel told Aldric that his caution was most justified.

Back inside the old temple, Kogaan, Douglan and Hahnu engaged the creature that now looked even more hideous than before with new arms, faces and mouths where the party had injured it during their last encounter. As Kogaan and Douglan drew up to the creature to attack, it launched into a whirlwind of clawing attacks that immediately put the party on the defense.

Aldric approached the room, seeing the others engaged in a fight against the massive troll. After an attempt to banish the creature with a powerful spell failed, he turned to his ever-reliable blasts of Eldritch energy conjured up from the Void.

The combined attacks wore heavy on the creature, wounding it such that it began to stumble. Hahnu jumped forward blasting the creature with his fiery breath. It fell backward landing with a heavy thud as flames still burned on its corpse.

The two parties greeted each other as the growing smoke from the troll’s burning body began to fill the room. The parties moved to the entrance of the old temple where introductions were made. Aldric explained that a being from the Void, known to him as the Hidden One, had explained that he needed to join Douglan and Kogaan in their quest to save Emathan from threats that would see both it and the Void changed forever, and not for the better.

The Hidden One had stood as Aldric’s friend and confidant for close to a decade, helping him to learn to conjure magic from the Void, track down powerful magic items and in his work as an urban bounty hunter. The Hidden One had asked for very little in return, so when it asked Aldric to join in this quest, he agreed without question.

The party decided that they were not comfortable spending the night near the old temple. It was agreed that they would travel a few hours then set up camp for the night. A fine camp that offered a warm, quiet night of rest. Something they would all need for the journey ahead.

The next day’s travels were miserable. The wind and snow were relentless. Despite the adverse conditions and a few wrong turns, the party made good headway toward the meeting point. A Sending message from Merfiz confirmed that the Stargazer would be there when they arrived.

As the evening sky began to darken, the party made camp and settled in for some much-needed hot food and rest. Hahnu spoke to Kogaan about things he was beginning to remember that he didn’t understand. Kogaan told him that he was beginning to remember his past life, and in time, it would all make sense.

As Douglan, Kogaan and Aldric chatted, Douglan was interrupted by a warning from his halberd. Danger was approaching from the southeast. As the party drew their weapons, a huge blue Frost Salamander came into view. One of the many freakish creatures affected by the chaotic magic of the Shattered lands.

Douglan mounted his magical warhorse and rode out to meet the creature. He hurled his lightning javelin which missed by inches. The creature answered the attack with a blast of freezing cold breath that instantly dispelled the magic warhorse and drove a shiver deep into Douglan’s bones.

The rest of the party leaped into action. Aldric successfully cast Banish upon the creature causing it to temporarily blink out of existence. The rest of the party members positioned themselves, ready to attack the second the creature returned.

At Aldric’s willing, the creature reappeared, and the party launched their attacks upon it. Unfortunately, Douglan smacked himself in the forehead with his halberd. Blood poured into his eyes temporarily blinding him.

The rest of the party rallied against the creature. Kogaan lashed out with a flurry of blows culminating with his invoking his Heim Rune. Fiery shackles grappled with the Frost Salamander who screeched in pain and dropped dead on the ground.

The remainder of the night was uneventful, and early the next morning, the party set out once again. This day was just as miserable as the last, with the party often trudging through knee deep snow. Just as the light of day began to wane, the party arrived at the meeting point. There, nestled in the clearing was the Stargazer. A welcome sight for the weary party.

After some quick introductions between Aldrich and the crew, the skyship departed and within minutes was high above the storm below and heading for warmer tempertures and Tionchar Winery.

The three-day trip was, for the most part, uneventful.

Douglan received a short visit from Lafferty warning that great disturbances were growing in the Void. Disturbances that he and Enibis believe are the beginning of Rifts that will eventually appear in Emathan.

Captain Merfiz called the party into his Foggy Dreams tavern to discuss a few things that had transpired while they were away including Tumble Thump not returning, Lyda staying on as the skyship’s Master-at-Arms, the skyship beginning to run low on funds and a request from Obadiah to meet with the party as soon as possible.
